Episode 009 – Goals Accomplished, Future Plans, God’s Faithfulness
We just had a nice ‘get-a-way’ for a full week. We relaxed, we reflected, we prayed, and we planned some for the future.
As we reflected on the first 4.5 years of our marriage, we see God’s faithfulness above all else. But – we also see the value of goals written down…and the power of focusing on these goals.
We are just sharing some from our own lives – want it to be encouraging in your lives as well. We don’t have it all together….we are just 2 people seeking God…trying to live life with purpose and meaning.

Episode 011 – Career Change Action Plan (Part 2): Finances
Part 2 in a series on making an action plan for your career change. It could be a big mistake if you don’t plan your finances well in your transition to a new career.
No, you don’t have to do it perfectly. But – it’s wise to have a plan in place. Get an emergency fund in place. Put together a monthly budget. Estimate the income gain or loss (in most well-planned cases…it’s a significant gain in income).
It’s not rocket science, but you do need to take action to make a change in career. Getting a financial plan together is a significant part of this.

Passion and Purpose Help to Build a Multi-Million Dollar Business
Lisa Pertzborn-Whiting – Passionate Business Owner
In 2005, my wife worked for Lisa at the Chamber of Commerce in Waunakee, Wisconsin. At that time, Lisa was the Director of Chamber of Commerce. But – she had dreams of more…
Like many people in the corporate world, Lisa was had plans to venture out on her own. She wanted to live out her passion of art and design. She wanted to spend more quality time with her family. She wanted to develop a business where her daughter Miranda (a special needs child) could have a place to work later in life.
We moved away from Wisconsin in March 2006. Lisa had just taken a leap of faith to run her business full-time. We’ve been in contact some with her over the past few years, but we didn’t realize just how much her business had exploded.
You’ll hear more of the story in an upcoming podcast episode of ‘Pursuing Meaningful Work’. We interviewed her and we’ll post that over the next few days. But – as a bit of a teaser…let’s just say that she’s landed multiple accounts with companies that you would recognize…that equal millions of dollars.
So, friends – can it pay to follow your passions…follow your values to a different career? Absolutely. Is it easy? Absolutely not. But, with a good plan…you can find or create truly meaningful work.

Risk Taking – in Life, and in Your Career
WARNING! You may be electrocuted if you run on the treadmill when wet!!
This is a sign on the wall in a hotel where I’m currently staying. It seems completely ridiculous…but it’s a real sign. And – it’s got me thinking about risk-taking tonight.
A few years ago, I took a big risk…a risk that seemed very stupid to some folks here in the U.S. I moved to Ukraine to teach English. I left a good job. I left the ‘stability’ of my own culture…of my own country.
Tonight (Christmas Eve) my wife and I are in Wisconsin. We are back in the place where we first lived after we got married. After 4 years of living in Ukraine, I took a big risk of moving back to the U.S. and marrying a long-term friend Stephanie).
Have these risks paid off for me? Absolutely. There are only 2 examples of major risks that I’ve taken in my life. The rewards of these risks have been incredible. I had a fantastic experience in Ukraine. I’ve got more friends in Eastern Europe than I ever imagined possible. I was later hired by a company as an international sales manager because of [Read more]

Episode 010 – Career Change Action Plan (Part 1)
Self-knowledge gained in the career coaching process is fantastic. But, this knowledge can be meaningless if you don’t put a plan together for your career change.
This is the first of several podcasts in which we’ll talk about making a career action plan. This one was done right before my wife and I took off on vacation for a week – to work on our own action plans for the future!

New Career in 2010? What’s Stopping You???

Contemplating a New Career in 2010? What’s Stopping You???
It’s easy to want a new career. It’s harder to take the steps to actually make it happen.
We all know someone who is miserable in their job. But – they are paralyzed by fear and can’t make a change. Here’s some of the typical excuses:
• What if I don’t find another job???
• I don’t want to give up the benefits that I have at this company.
• I don’t have time to make a career change!
• I’ve been here a long time – I don’t want to give up my retirement benefits.
• I’m not sure what I’d do if I did make a change!
Any of these reasons could be valid. But – most of the time…they are just an excuse – something to mask fear in a person’s life.
Time and time again, we see people that choose to make a change to a career that’s a better fit – and are very happy that they’ve made the change. Often, they realize only afterward just how miserable they were in their previous job. And – after the change, they often make more money and have even better benefits.
But – it takes courage…and a plan to make it happen.
What are your plans for 2010? How about stop making excuses…and make the change to a career that’s a better fit for you.
At Leadership Equip, LLC we can help. We can help you find your ‘true self’ (personality, passions, values, skills) – and help you develop a plan to find a career that’s a better fit.

Episode 008 – Reflecting on the Past, Planning for the Future
Stephanie and I have a tradition of ‘getting away’ on a regular basis. We need time to ‘unplug’. We need down time to just relax and spend with each other away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
Each year, we have a ‘Year-End Get-A-Way for these reasons. But – we also take time to reflect on the year and make plans for the future. This year, we are returning to Madison, Wisconsin (where we started our marriage 4 1/2 years ago) for our annual ritual. We’ll reflect on how much we’ve changed and grown as people, as a couple, and as Christians in these past few years. We will review our goals for last year and establish new ones for 2010.
It’s all part of our plan to live with purpose and live with meaning on a regular basis. We don’t do everything perfectly, but trying to live life strategically sure helps.

Sick of Work? Pursue Your Passions to a Better Career
Our team at Leadership Equip has the privilege of working with some tremendously cool clients. I love telling stories in general…but I really love telling stories about our clients.
A current career coaching client worked through the ‘Passions’ part of our process. We spent 2 full sessions ‘bringing to the surface’ things that she is passionate about. After the end of the first session she said something that I’ll quote again and again. ‘I know what I’m passionate about…but my passions just don’t pay the bills!!’
And – it was true. But…I told her ‘Your passions don’t pay the bills…in their current form’.
Since that time, she’s begun formulating a new career plan around her passions. Her current job (she’s been there 8+ years!) doesn’t give her the chance to pursue her greatest passions. So – she’s developing a transition plan to move life-draining job that she hates to something that she’s more excited about. She’s starting a side business around her passions that will eventually develop into a full-time gig.
This is the part I like. A light bulb seems to light up. Suddenly…she feels free…feels like it’s ‘ok’ to actually want to do something for a living that she likes. That’s a major turning point in the process with most clients. Once they get past that point, they can move forward with plans for a change. It can still be a scary process…but they move forward with more boldness and confidence.
What are your passions? Are you in a life-draining job that zaps your energy? Or, are you in a position where you can’t wait to get to work because you love it so much. Recent research by the Gallup Organization shows that over half the people in the U.S. workforce are ‘disengaged’ at their work. Statistics show that these unhappy workers are more likely to be depressed. So – half the people in the U.S. are literally sick of their jobs.
Are you sick of your work literally? If so…it’s time for a change….

Episode 007 – Is it Ungodly to Make a Lot of Money?
I’ve had interesting discussions lately with a variety of people about spirituality and money. For some reason, it seems that poverty is associated with Godliness. My views have changed on this through the years. I ‘think out loud’ as I’m driving about recent conversations I’ve had on this topic recently. By the way – I don’t recommend recording podcasts while you are driving…plus on snowy roads (as I do in this podcast!)

Episode 006 – The Value of Deep, Long-Term Relationships
God has wired us as relational beings – relational beings that need Him and need other people. In this episode, I talk about the value of long-term relationships…and focus on the story of a relationship I’ve had for 18 years that’s continued to grow over time. Nothing replaces an open, honest, deep friendship….nothing….
