Working Within Your Strengths
A few years ago, Gallup Organization released the book ‘StrengthsFinder’.I remember reading the book. I was in a career transition myself at that time. I had just been laid off from a job in Wisconsin. And this was only a few months after I moved back to the States from Eastern Europe.
The book…but more importantly…the concepts…were revolutionary to me.
The main understanding that I took from the book was this: It’s ok to be me. It’s ok to have certain strengths and weaknesses. And – it’s ok to have a job that utilizes your strengths more than your weaknesses.
I know – the concept seems simple. But businesses (especially in Western Europe and North America) just can’t resist the temptation to identify and really hammer on your weaknesses.
Have you ever had one of those performance evaluations? I mean the ones where they focus for 5 minutes on your strengths…then at least 30 minutes on your ‘weaknesses’. Oops…I mean ‘areas of opportunity’.
If you’re in a job right now that doesn’t fit…don’t fret. Many people are in this situation. In fact, at time of writing this blog post, 80% of those surveyed on our website have said they want to leave their job in 2 years or less.
But, you might have to make the best of it in your current job. It’s okay to have a plan to leave…but try to make the best of it while you are there. Of course, we can help you with a plan to leave. But…we can help you make the best of it while you are there as well.
In the weeks ahead in our podcast and blog, we’ll offer some suggestions on how to make the best of it in your current job…even it’s not a good ‘fit’.
If you try to focus your duties on your strengths…you may even be surprised at how enjoyable your current job could be…
We’d love to help you in this process of finding a good ‘fit’ vocationally. Feel free to contact us at brent@leadershipequip.com or click on the logo below to see our career coaching services.

Work the Weekend or have a Nerf Gun Fight?
Are you finding meaning in life beyond your work?![nerf_gun[1] nerf_gun[1]](http://leadershipequipnetwork.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/nerf_gun1.jpg)
I’ve looked around and seen this so many times in my professional life: people that have sacrificed personal lives for the sake of ‘work’.
‘Successful’ businesspeople often have their lives littered with divorces, strained relationships with their children, and limited social life beyond the job.
Is this what you want?
I hope the answer is no. But – too many people in today’s world answer ‘yes’ by their actions. I’ve heard wives begging for their husbands to come home and mow the yard…or go to their son’s baseball game. I’ve heard husbands ask their wives to not put so much time in at the job….to come home and spend more time w/ the family.
I think that we’ve created some of these problems ourselves.
As a society, we seem to ‘worship’ people that pour themselves into their work. A TV show I love has the characters working all hours…sometimes all day and all night. A neighbor is never home – he looks like a stranger to me when I see him out mowing the yard…and I wonder how he’ll get to know his newborn son. A former colleague used to avoid going home at all costs, because he was respected more at his work than he was at home.
Maybe you expect too much from your work.
To have a healthy, balanced life you need much more than just work.
This weekend, I spent time with my wife and her family in New Mexico. Her Grandma is 93 years old…and full of stories from the past. She’s not quite as sharp as she used to be. But, it sure is fun to spend time around her….to learn from her.
I had a bunch of things to do – I could have spent the entire weekend ‘working’. But – I didn’t. And…I don’t regret it at all. I had great walks and talks with my wife….some of the best we’ve had. And – I participated in the best ‘nerf gun fight’ that I’ve ever been in.
So before you’re tempted to work through the weekend and neglect your family….evaluate what is most important to you over the long-term.
Sometimes, a Nerf gun fight is much more important than your work…..
