Episode 022 – Undercover Boss 7 Eleven CEO
There’s a new series on CBS called ‘Undercover Boss’. The premise is that CEO’s go ‘undercover’ for a week in their own company. They work a variety of different jobs (including entry-level jobs), then take the knowledge they gain from the experiences and the people back to headquarters to make positive changes.
This past week was the CEO of 7 Eleven, Joe DePinto, was the featured CEO last week. It was a great episode. After the undercover week, Joe made very positive changes for the company and rewarded some of his employees in very specific, tangible ways.

Who are you at the core?
I think we get caught up in who we should be. Who the world things we should be…who our friends think we should be….who our family thinks we should be.
But…do we take the time to find out who we are at the core….at the very center of our being?
Sometimes, I’m guilty of this. I listen too much to what the world thinks.
I have to get away…reflect…seek God…listen to hear what he has to say about me. He’s talking…but I’m not always listening.
We have to take time to examine our personality…our passions…our values…our interests. Many of these things are God-given desires that offer clues to who we are…what our calling is.
That doesn’t mean that it’s easy to figure out who we are at the core. I’ve learned more about myself at each step of the way. I’ve learned while I worked here in the professional world in the U.S. I learned when I taught English in Ukraine. I learned when I traveled the world as a Sales Manager. I’m learning now as I own and operate my own company.
Through the years, I’ve gotten to know who I am ‘at the core’ better at better. The world doesn’t always understand who I am…but God does. And that’s comforting.

Episode 016 – Removing Unhealthy Things from our Lives
In this episode, I’m cruising across Iowa and reflecting on ‘unhealthy’ things in our lives.
When I say unhealthy, I mean things that affect our overall health in many areas – relationships, work, physical, etc.
Too many times I’ve seen people remain in a relationship, in a job, in some type of situation that ‘erodes’ their overall health.
We challenge you to take a good look at your life…and see what unhealthy things may need to be removed.

Episode 015 – Love and Life in Black and White
Journey with us as we strive to live lives of meaning and purpose.
In this episode, we share some thoughts about a ‘meaty’ book we are reading called ‘Love and War’ (by John and Stasi Elderedge) as well as our journey into new relationships at a new church we are attending. We are learning what it means to be part of the body of Christ – that’s both black and white in skin color…but a ton of fun to be a part of.

Episode 019 – Meaningful Work Interview
Tano and Patty Tovilla
Interview with our good friends Tano and Patty Tovilla. They are originally from Mexico, but have found work with meaning and purpose here in the U.S.
About 10 years ago, Tano and I met at a conference in Nashville, Tennessee. We were working for the same company – me in the U.S., he in Mexico. We became friends as we met several times for training conferences over a period of about 18 months.
Unfortunately, we lost contact for several years after that.
But – 3 years ago, Tano and I found each other again – he was working for a company called Seaboard Foods. I was working for a company that provided service to Seaboard. Our friendship was re-established.
It’s been very cool to get reconnected with Tano these last 3 years and develop a relationship with his wife Patty. My wife and I love spending time with them…they are full of ‘life’ and are a real joy to be around.
Listen in as Tano and Patty talk about their journey of pursuing meaningful work across cultures. It’s taken time and effort…but both of them have found work that is a great ‘fit’ right here in the heartland of America in Kansas.

Pursuing Meaningful Work…Across Cultures
One of the things I absolutely love is living and working across cultures.
Although I live in the U.S. now, I’ve enjoyed the adventure of living and working in other countries in the past. There is a richness and excitement to being in a new environment day to day…an environment where you aren’t familiar and lean on what’s familiar.
Folks from approximately 35 countries are listening to the ‘Pursuing Meaningful Work’ podcast and reading our blogs. Our goal is to help provide hope and encouragement to people all around the world who are pursuing work with meaning and purpose. In light of this, many of our interviews and our blog posts will have a ‘cross-cultural’ twist.
Last night, I interviewed a really cool couple (Tano and Patty Tovilla) who are living and working cross-culturally. I met Tano in the mid 1990′s when he and I were working for the same company. He was working as a sales rep in Mexico. I was working here in the U.S.
A few years ago, Tano and Patty decided to pursue a new adventure of woking cross-culturally. They moved to the U.S. with Tano’s new job in the Oklahoma panhandle.
They are great example of the richness of experience that can come when you are open to new experiences, open to new people, and want to live a life of adventure.
Currently, they both have found work with meaning and purpose. I won’t mention details here…they’ll be in the podcast that we release over the next couple of days.
Be sure and tune in. They have a great story of how to live and work successfully across cultures.
